Richard Birch's play of the day at Windsor
Magnificent Match
4.55 Windsor
Testing ground is a relative unknown as far as Magnificent Match is concerned, but this progressive three-year-old comes from a family who like the mud and he rates an irresistible punting proposition in the mile handicap (4.55).
Magnificent Match won with far more in hand than a head margin suggests at Yarmouth on good to firm ground two starts ago off 3lb lower.
By far the last off the bridle, he wasn’t shaken up until inside the final furlong and quickened smartly to beat Shaws Phoenix. Magnificent Match failed to complete a double back at Yarmouth on good ground last Tuesday, but lost nothing in defeat.
Once again, he exhibited a conspicuously high cruising speed for a Class 6 performer and the waiting tactics were arguably overdone this time as Born A Rebel was allowed first run.
Nearest at the finish, Magnificent Match gives the impression there are more races to be won with him when he steps up in trip, and this looks a suitable opportunity before connections focus on his stamina.
Magnificent Match pulled two lengths clear of the third, Lia Rose, last time out, and is likely to be raised by the handicapper so he’s potentially a couple of pounds well-in.
